How to Help Ease Separation Anxiety in Pets

Ten dog breeds show signs of separation anxiety. Left-behind syndrome is most common in dogs that aren’t past the puppy phase, as they rely on their owners for feeding, affection, and playtime.

If you’ve recently become a pet parent who has just developed this anxiety, this situation can put you in a tough spot to feel guilty. But there are ways to help ease tension in pets.

We’ve got some great suggestions for that below! Read on for anything you need to know!

Identify the Causes of Separation Anxiety

When identifying the causes of separation anxiety in pets, you must understand the underlying triggers of their behaviors. Pay close attention to any changes in routine and environment, as these can be significant causes of anxiety. Familiarity and consistency are essential in helping ease your pet’s separation anxiety.

Establish a Pre-departure Routine

Establishing a pre-departure routine is an effective way to help ease separation anxiety in pets. This routine should include activities before leaving that are calming and predictable, such as brushing fur, petting, and playing.

An excellent pre-departure routine could include playing fetch for a few minutes. When done, the person should clearly distinguish between playtime and goodbye time.

A pet should also have positive experiences when the owner returns. It can include rewarding them with treats and showing them lots of love. This routine should be consistent, helping pets recognize that their owners will eventually return.

Provide Comfort and Distractions While Away

One of the best ways is to give comfort and distractions while away. It can include the following:

  • Setting up a comfortable and familiar bed
  • Provide some fun toys
  • Hide some tasty treats around the room
  • Playing soothing music

Other helpful techniques include familiar scents and leaving some clothes or a blanket with your bouquet. Ultimately, providing comfort and distractions while away is an effective way to help ease separation anxiety in pets.

Exercise and Stimulation Before Departing

Regular exercise and mental stimulation help ease separation anxiety in pets. It will help them relax and feel less on edge as soon as they prepare for departure.

A good, long walk in the morning can clear your pup’s mind and tire him out before you leave. Mental stimulation activities, such as pup puzzles, activity mats, and busy food toys, will help increase oxytocin levels and make the pup calmer.

Create a Safe and Familiar Space for Your Pet

Creating a safe and familiar space for your pet can help ease separation anxiety. To do this, give comfortable and safe rooms in many locations. It could include a dog or cat bed, a crate, or a blanket designated for your pet.

Allow free-roaming areas indoors so your pet can explore and be curious in a safe and familiar environment. Enroll them in cat and dog boarding training to help them understand a safe and friendly space.

Ease Anxiety in Pets Today

Separation anxiety in pets can be challenging to deal with. However, there are ways to help your pet cope. With patience and dedication, you can help your pet feel at ease alone in their home.

If you have further questions or concerns, your veterinarian can help give advice and tools to ease your furry friend’s anxiety.
