Horses are animals that have been used for human transportation since time immemorial. They are quite useful not just for personal transportation but also for transporting heavy luggage across faraway lands. Aside from that, they have been bred and raised to enter competitions such as horse raising, polo and other equestrian sports and events. They are not just any animal that you can raise as a pet. Owning a horse can be beneficial in a lot of ways.
Horses, like any other animal, need adequate care and love so they can perform as great as you would like them to be. And here are the basic ways to take care of them:
Proper Grooming
You must allot a separate place for grooming your horses. Make sure they do not go away as you groom them so better tie them to a post so they won’t suddenly run from you. Make sure you are ready to get dirty because grooming a horse can be quite messy. Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty and get on with properly grooming your house. In cleaning your horse’s coat, ensure that you are using the right kind of brush so as not to damage your horse’s delicate skin. Make them as comfortable as possible so they do not get irritated as you groom them.
Correct Feeding
Not all hays are good for your horse. So when you feed them, make sure you are feeding them the correct hay because there are hays that can damage their lungs and may lead to further health issues. Inform yourself adequately to make sure you are doing the right kind of feeding. It is better if the grass is highly abundant in your location because this is the natural food for horses. But in case it isn’t, make sure you have good hay around.
Providing Appropriate Cover
Horses also need to have appropriate covers, especially in cold weathers and they are outside. Their body heat can possibly take it but covering them with horse rugs can also help them manage the cold weather. Getting nicely designed rugs can also be great especially if you intend to bring them out for longer.
Safe Shelter for Your Horse
Your horses also need a shelter that will protect them and comfortably keep them from inclement weather. There are different designs for stalls that you can choose from. Whatever design you want will work just as long as you consider heavily the comfort of your animals in building such stalls.
Healthcare
Horses are not exempt from sickness so be sure to give them regular check-ups with the veterinarian in order to prevent any possible sickness. Prevention is always better than cure so it is highly important that any symptom of a health issue is addressed promptly and treated as soon as possible. Injuries can be quite common for horses, too so be wary of any sign of injury and call the doctor the soonest as possible time.
Horses, unlike other animals, are not easy to handle. For one, their size is a big factor in caring for them. They need their own space and they need to be handled with care, too. But, above all ways of taking care of them, the main ingredient still points to your love and concern for their well-being and overall health.
