Pet Nourishment: A Quick Guide to Different Types of Dog Food

Did you know that pet foods make up $320 billion today in the industry? That’s because so many people who own pets want to invest in their health.

As a pet owner, you want to feed your pet a healthy diet. Also, you want it to taste good!

There are so many brands of dog food and an array of variety to choose from. But to make it easier for you, we’ve written a brief guide on types of dog food. Keep on reading.

Dry Dog Food (Kibble)

The best type of dry dog food or kibble can provide a balanced meal for your pet dog. This type of dog food is highly convenient and less time-consuming to prepare compared to raw or homemade diets. It is also easier to store and usually comes with a longer shelf life.

Some brands of dry food also offer additional nutrients and vitamins in the form of supplements or toppers. There are numerous pet related products for sale to cater to the needs and well-being of your furry friends. Consult with your veterinarian, and gradually transition your dog to a new diet to avoid digestive upset.

Wet Dog Food (Canned)

Canned dog food is a convenient, easy-to-serve option as it is pre-cooked and shelf-stable. Wet food can provide a higher level of hydration than many other types of dog foods. Generally, it contains larger amounts of proteins, vitamins, and minerals, making it nutritionally dense.

The higher moisture content makes it easier for a dog to digest, particularly if they have a sensitive stomach. Older dogs may benefit from wet dog food canned as it is softer, making it easier to chew. Canned dog food often contains fewer fillers and healthier ingredients like real meat and other nutritious ingredients.

In addition to the high nutritional value, wet dog food canned is very palatable and may appeal to even the pickiest dogs.

Raw Dog Food (BARF or Biologically Appropriate Raw Food)

Raw Dog Food, or Biologically Appropriate Raw Food, consists of high-quality, raw ingredients, such as muscle meat, meaty bones, eggs, fruits, vegetables, and other supplements. Meat is the main source of protein while bones provide calcium and fat, along with other vital vitamins and minerals.

BARF looks and smells like human food but offers the natural health benefits of a raw diet. Benefits of BARF include the hardening of tooth enamel, stronger teeth and gums, reduced risk of many serious illnesses such as cancer, improved bowel health, shiny coat, and improved energy levels. It is also easy to store, transport, and prepare.

Freeze-Dried or Dehydrated Dog Food

This type of food is free from preservatives and additives, and it provides a wide range of complete nutrition for both adult and puppy pets. Freeze-dried and dehydrated food contains freeze-dried or dehydrated meat and vegetables, fruits, and greens for a flavor and nutrient-packed diet.

Even if the food is freeze-dried, it is still full of live enzymes and must be refrigerated once it is re-hydrated. Freeze-dried or dehydrated dog food is a great option for those who are concerned about their dog’s health and nutrition.

Select The Right Types Of Dog Food For Your Pet

Different types of dog food can have a variety of nutritional benefits for your pet. Whether you opt for home-cooked proteins and vegetables, kibble with added vitamins, or a raw food meal plan, it is important to provide your pet with a nutritious, balanced diet.
